Rene Maurice Frechet was a French mathematician, born on 2 September 1878 and died on 4 June 1973. He made major contributions to general topology and was the first to define metric spaces. He also made several important contributions to statistics and probability, as well as to calculus. His dissertation opened the entire field of functionals on metric spaces and introduced the notion of compactness. Independently of Riesz he discovered the representation theorem in the space of Lebesgue square integrable functions, and he is often called the founder of the theory of abstract spaces.

Compactness was formally introduced by Maurice Fréchet in 1906 in work generalizing the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem from sets of points to spaces of functions.

Named after Maurice Fréchet, it is commonly used to generalize the derivative of a real-valued function of a single real variable to the case of a vector-valued function of multiple real variables, and to define the functional derivative used widely in the calculus of variations.

The distribution is named after Swedish mathematician Waloddi Weibull, who described it in detail in 1939, although it was first identified by René Maurice Fréchet and first applied by Rosin & Rammler (1933) to describe a particle size distribution.
