Stanislaw Marcin Ulam (April 13, 1909 - May 13, 1984) was a Polish-American mathematician and physicist born in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary (now Lviv, Ukraine), who became a United States citizen in 1941. He is best known for originating the Teller-Ulam design of thermonuclear weapons while working on the Manhattan Project, and for inventing the Monte Carlo method of computation, which became a standard approach to problems across science and finance. He also helped develop early cellular automaton concepts, championed nuclear pulse propulsion through Project Orion, and collaborated with Enrico Fermi on the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou problem, which helped inspire the field of nonlinear science. In pure mathematics he proved numerous theorems and proposed significant conjectures spanning set theory, topology, combinatorics, and number theory.
