Generalized Poincare Conjecture

Geometry

The generalized Poincare conjecture, in topology, states that a manifold that is a homotopy sphere is a sphere. Precisely, fixing a category of manifolds as topological, piecewise linear, or differentiable, every homotopy sphere in that category is isomorphic, in that category's own sense, to the standard sphere of the same dimension. The name derives from the original Poincare conjecture, made for three-dimensional manifolds, where being a homotopy sphere is equivalent to being simply connected and closed. The generalized conjecture is known to be true or false in a number of instances, through the work of topologists including the Fields medalists John Milnor, Steve Smale, Michael Freedman and Grigori Perelman. Facts
Prize Status
The three dimensional case, the original Poincare conjecture, was named a Millennium Prize Problem by the Clay Mathematics Institute. Grigori Perelman proved it in 2003 and was awarded the prize but declined it in March 2010. 1
Progress Toward Resolution
Status is category dependent: in the topological category the conjecture holds in all dimensions; in the piecewise linear category it holds in all dimensions except dimension 4, where it is unknown; in the differentiable category it is false in general, holding only in dimensions 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 12, 56 and 61. 1
