Modular Group

Algebra

The modular group is the group PSL(2, Z) of 2 by 2 integer matrices with determinant 1, under the convention that a matrix and its negative are identified with each other. It acts on the upper half of the complex plane through linear fractional transformations known as Mobius transformations. Despite its name, the modular group takes its name from its connection to moduli spaces rather than to modular arithmetic.
