A norm is a function from a real or complex vector space to the nonnegative real numbers that behaves like a distance from the origin: it scales linearly with scalar multiplication, satisfies the triangle inequality, and equals zero only at the zero vector. Norms generalize the ordinary notion of length, with the Euclidean distance in Euclidean space as the most familiar example. Different norms measure the size of the same vector in different ways, which matters throughout analysis and linear algebra.
