Window Function

In signal processing and statistics, a window function, also called an apodization function or tapering function, is a mathematical function that is zero-valued outside a chosen interval, typically symmetric, peaking in the middle and tapering toward the edges. When a window function is multiplied by another function or data sequence, the product is zero outside the interval, leaving only the overlapping portion, in effect giving a view through the window onto the underlying data. Window functions are widely used in spectral analysis to reduce the distortion introduced by analyzing only a finite segment of a signal.
