Tombstone (Typography)

Logic, Foundations and Set Theory

In mathematics, the tombstone, also called the halmos or end-of-proof symbol, is a small filled or hollow square placed at the end of a written proof to mark that it is complete, serving the same role as the traditional Latin abbreviation Q.E.D. (quod erat demonstrandum, that which was to be demonstrated). Its use follows the typographic practice of end marks, printer devices that signal the close of a piece of text.
