Probability and Statistics

Named probabilistic and statistical objects studied as individual constructions rather than as general theorems. Belongs here: the Normal Distribution, the bell-shaped continuous distribution that the central limit theorem makes the default model of accumulated random error; the Markov Chain, a sequence of states in which the next state depends only on the current one, not on the fuller history behind it; Brownian Motion, the continuous-time random process first modeled to describe pollen jitter and later formalized as the Wiener process underlying stochastic calculus. Does not belong here: the general theory of probability or statistics, the branch entity Probability and Statistics, and physical models that happen to use probabilistic methods but whose own subject is a physical system rather than a probabilistic construction, such as the Ising Model, filed under Mathematical Physics, Biology and Game Theory below because that is the cluster its own live SubLabel places it in.

The modern mathematical theory of probability has its roots in attempts to analyze games of chance by Gerolamo Cardano in the sixteenth century, and by Pierre de Fermat and Blaise Pascal in the seventeenth century (for example the problem of points).
