Alcubierre Drive

The Alcubierre drive is a speculative warp-drive concept under which a spacecraft could achieve apparent faster-than-light travel by contracting space ahead of it and expanding space behind it, assuming an exotic energy-density field lower than that of a vacuum could be created. It was proposed by theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre in 1994 and is based on a solution, known as the Alcubierre metric, to Einstein field equations, since the underlying solutions take the form of metric tensors.
