A Carlyle circle is a particular circle in a coordinate plane associated with a quadratic equation, named after the writer Thomas Carlyle. It has the property that the solutions of the quadratic equation appear as the horizontal coordinates of the points where the circle crosses the horizontal axis, and Carlyle circles have been used to build ruler and compass constructions of regular polygons.
