Primorial

Number Theory

The primorial, denoted p_n#, is a function that multiplies together the first n prime numbers, playing the same role among primes that the factorial plays among all positive integers. For example, the primorial of the first five primes is p_5#, equal to 2 times 3 times 5 times 7 times 11, which equals 2310, and the sequence of primorials begins 1, 2, 6, 30, 210, 2310 and continues to grow rapidly. The term was coined by Harvey Dubner as a deliberate echo of factorial, since primorial relates to primes the way factorial relates to factors.

  • Lead section
In mathematics, and more particularly in number theory, primorial, denoted by " p n # {\displaystyle p_{n}\#} ", is a function from natural numbers to natural numbers similar to the factorial function, but rather than successively multiplying positive integers, the function only multiplies prime numbers.
