The Marquis de Condorcet's most important work was on probability and the philosophy of mathematics. He was born in Ribemont, France on 17 September 1743 and died in Bourg-la-Reine near Paris on 29 March 1794. He applied probability to voting and to the reliability of juries, and his observation that majority rule can produce a cycle of preferences remains central in social choice theory. The Condorcet paradox and early mathematical thinking about elections come from his work.
