Simon Stevin was a Flemish mathematician who presented the first elementary and thorough account of decimal fractions and introduced their use in mathematics. He was born in Bruges in 1548 and died in The Hague in February 1620. His 1585 booklet on decimals showed that calculations with fractions could be reduced to whole-number arithmetic, and he introduced decimal fractions into mathematical practice and pioneered statics and engineering mathematics.
