Tobias Mayer was a German scientist who developed the method of determining longitude by lunar observations. He was born in Marbach in Württemberg on 17 February 1723 and died in Göttingen on 20 February 1762. His lunar tables allowed navigators at sea to find their longitude from the position of the moon, and he made the practical computation of astronomy and navigation precise, working within the Göttingen scholarly tradition.
