Takakazu Seki was a Japanese mathematician who was the first person to study determinants. He also discovered Bernoulli numbers before Jacob Bernoulli. He was born in Fujioka, in Kozuke Province, Japan in March 1642 and died in Edo, now Tokyo, on 5 December 1708. He developed a method of elimination and a theory of determinants in 1683, and he is an independent originator of the determinant, alongside Leibniz, whose work came in 1693.
