Marin Mersenne was a French monk who is best known for his role as a clearing house for correspondence between eminent philosophers and scientists and for his work in number theory. He was born in Oizé, Maine, on 8 September 1588 and died in Paris on 1 September 1648. Primes of the form two to a power minus one are named after him because he studied them in the early seventeenth century, and he was a link between the mathematicians of his age.
