Laurent Schwartz was a French mathematician who is best known for his work in the theory of distributions. He was born in Paris on 5 March 1915 and died there on 4 July 2002. His theory of distributions gave a rigorous meaning to objects such as the Dirac delta function, which physicists had used for decades, and it became the standard language of linear partial differential equations. He developed the mathematical rigor behind the delta function and is a major figure in functional analysis.
