Abraham Fraenkel was a German-born mathematician, born in Munich on 17 February 1891 and dying in Jerusalem on 15 October 1965, who made contributions to axiomatic set theory. He is the F in the ZFC axioms for set theory, the standard foundation on which most of modern mathematics is built. His name stands for the Zermelo and Fraenkel tradition of stating exactly which set-building rules are allowed, and his life ran from Bavaria to Israel, so he also stands for the way the foundations of mathematics were carried across continents.
