Claude Chevalley was a French mathematician, born on 11 February 1909, who made important contributions to number theory, algebraic geometry, class field theory, finite group theory and the theory of algebraic groups, and was a founding member of the Bourbaki group. He graduated from the École Normale Supérieure in 1929, studied under Emil Artin at the University of Hamburg and under Helmut Hasse at the University of Marburg, and was awarded a doctorate in 1933 by the University of Paris for a thesis on class field theory. When World War II broke out he was at Princeton University and stayed in the United States, first at Princeton and then from 1947 at Columbia University, where he became an American citizen. He died on 28 June 1984.
