Ferdinand von Lindemann was the first to prove that pi is transcendental, that is, pi is not the root of any algebraic equation with rational coefficients. He was born in Hannover on 12 April 1852 and died in Munich on 6 March 1939. His 1882 proof settled the ancient problem of squaring the circle, showing that it cannot be done with straightedge and compass. He was the first to prove the transcendence of pi.
