Gustav Kirchhoff was a mathematical physicist best known for his laws on the flow of electric current. He was born in Königsberg, Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia) on 12 March 1824 and died in Berlin on 17 October 1887. He published the matrix-tree theorem on counting the spanning trees of a graph in 1847 while analysing electrical networks, which makes him an early figure in graph theory as well as in physics. His name is tied to the theorem for counting spanning trees and to the circuit laws.
