Josiah Willard Gibbs

Modern

J Willard Gibbs was an American mathematician best-known for the Gibbs effect seen when Fourier-analysing a discontinuous function. He was born in New Haven, Connecticut on 11 February 1839 and died there on 28 April 1903. A convex hull in thermodynamics was identified by Gibbs in 1873, and the Gibbs phenomenon appears whenever a Fourier series is used to approximate a function with a jump. He studied at Yale, where in 1863 he received what was the first doctorate of engineering conferred in the United States.
