Reinhold Baer's mathematical work was wide ranging, covering topology, abelian groups and geometry. His most important work, however, was in group theory, on the extension problem for groups, finiteness conditions, soluble and nilpotent groups. He was born in Berlin on 22 July 1902 and died in Zürich on 22 October 1979. His name is connected with the Baer sum of extensions, Baer's criterion for injective modules and Baer rings in algebra.
