Wilhelm Magnus was a German American mathematician who worked in combinatorial group theory, Lie algebras, mathematical physics, elliptic functions, and the study of tessellations. He was born in Berlin on 5 February 1907 and died in New Rochelle, New York on 15 October 1990. In the 1930s he discovered the connection between the lower central series of free groups and free Lie algebras, and the Magnus expansion and the study of free groups are connected with his name.
