Johann Benedict Listing

Modern

Johann Benedict Listing (25 July 1808 to 24 December 1882) was a German mathematician and physicist, remembered as a pioneer of topology, a field that also takes its name from his work. Born in Frankfurt, he studied mathematics and architecture at the University of Göttingen and received his doctorate in 1834 under Carl Friedrich Gauss. In 1847 he published Vorstudien zur Topologie, a book that helped introduce the term topology into general use. Independently of August Ferdinand Möbius he discovered the special properties of the Möbius strip in 1858, and in geodesy he coined the term geoid in 1872.
