John Leech

Modern

John Leech was an English mathematician who is best known for the Leech lattice, which is important in the theory of finite simple groups. He was born on 21 July 1926 at Weybridge in Surrey and died on 28 September 1992 on board the SS Waverley at sea. He graduated from King's College, Cambridge, as a wrangler in 1950, then worked for Ferranti in Manchester on an early digital computer. He lectured in the Computing Laboratory at Glasgow University from 1959 and in 1968 became Reader and first Head of Computing Science at the new University of Stirling. A pure mathematician by inclination, he developed one of the first programs implementing the Todd-Coxeter coset enumeration algorithm.
