Richard Hamming was an American mathematician and computer scientist, best known for the so-called Hamming code. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on 11 February 1915 and died in Monterey, California on 7 January 1998. His 1950 paper on error detecting and error correcting codes gave the field its basic ideas, and the Hamming distance, which counts the positions at which two strings differ, and the Hamming weight, which is named after him although he did not originate the notion, are linked to him.
