In commutative algebra, the elementary symmetric polynomials are a basic family of building blocks for symmetric polynomials, in the sense that any symmetric polynomial can be written as a polynomial in the elementary symmetric polynomials, using only addition, multiplication, and constants alongside them. For each positive integer d up to the number of variables n, there is exactly one elementary symmetric polynomial of degree d in n variables, formed by adding together all of the distinct products of d different variables.
