Frank Morley

Modern

Frank Morley (9 September 1860 to 17 October 1937) was a leading mathematician, known mostly for his teaching and research in algebra and geometry. Among his accomplishments was the discovery and proof of the celebrated Morley trisector theorem in elementary plane geometry. He was born in Woodbridge, Suffolk, England, to Quaker parents who ran a china shop, and attended King's College, Cambridge, graduating in 1884. In 1887 he moved to Pennsylvania and taught at Haverford College until 1900. He led 50 doctoral students, including Clara Latimer Bacon, to their degrees, and was described as one of the striking figures of the small group of men who brought mathematics in America from a minor position to its present place.
