Frigyes Riesz was a Hungarian mathematician, born on 22 January 1880 and died on 28 February 1956, sometimes known in English and French as Frederic Riesz. He made fundamental contributions to functional analysis, the study of spaces of functions and the operators acting on them, as did his younger brother Marcel Riesz. Functional analysis treats functions as points of an infinite dimensional space, and Riesz was one of the mathematicians who gave that viewpoint its foundations in the early twentieth century.

In mathematical analysis, the rising sun lemma is a lemma due to Frigyes Riesz, used in the proof of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal theorem. The lemma was a precursor in one dimension of the Calderón-Zygmund

The Riesz representation theorem, sometimes called the Riesz-Fréchet representation theorem after Frigyes Riesz and Maurice René Fréchet, establishes an important connection between a Hilbert space and its continuous dual space.
