Nikolai Grigorievich Chebotaryov (15 June 1894 to 2 July 1947), often spelled Chebotarov or Chebotarev, was a Soviet mathematician best known for the Chebotaryov density theorem. Born in Kamianets-Podilskyi in the Russian Empire, he entered the department of physics and mathematics at Kiev University in 1912 and was a student of Dmitry Grave. He worked on the algebra of polynomials, in particular the distribution of their zeros, and studied Galois theory, writing a textbook titled Basic Galois Theory. His ideas were used by Emil Artin to prove the Artin reciprocity law. With his student Anatoly Dorodnov he worked on a generalization of the quadrature of the lune, and he proved the conjecture now known as the Chebotarev theorem on roots of unity.
