Stefan Banach was a Polish mathematician, born in Krakow on 30 March 1892 to a family of Goral descent, who died on 31 August 1945. He is generally considered one of the most important and influential mathematicians of the twentieth century, and was one of the founders of modern functional analysis and an original member of the Lwow School of Mathematics.
