Edmund Landau

Modern

Edmund Landau gave the first systematic presentation of analytic number theory and wrote important works on the theory of analytic functions of a single variable. He was born in Berlin on 14 February 1877 into a wealthy Jewish family, attended the French Lycée there, finished school two years early, received his doctorate under Frobenius in 1899 with a thesis on number theory, and died in Berlin on 19 February 1938. His name is tied to Landau's problems about primes and to the notation and definitions of the number pi in analysis.

One such definition, due to Richard Baltzer and popularized by Edmund Landau, is the following: π is twice the smallest positive number at which the cosine function equals 0. π is also the smallest positive number at which the sine function equals zero, and the difference between consecutive zeroes of the sine function
