The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, in Riemannian geometry and geometric measure theory, states that the classical isoperimetric inequality can be generalized to spaces of nonpositive sectional curvature, called Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. Named after Elie Cartan and Jacques Hadamard, the conjecture may be traced back to work of Andre Weil in 1926. Facts
StatementIf the sectional curvature of an ambient Cartan-Hadamard manifold M is bounded above by a nonpositive constant k, the conjecture states that the least perimeter enclosure of any given volume in M cannot have smaller perimeter than a sphere enclosing the same volume in the model space of constant curvature k, generalizing the classical isoperimetric inequality. 1 Proposed Year Progress Toward ResolutionProven in dimension 2 by André Weil in 1926, in dimension 4 by Chris Croke in 1984, in dimension 3 by Bruce Kleiner in 1992, and in dimensions 5 through 9 by Shibing Chen, Mohammad Ghomi and Peng Wang in 2026. Dimensions 10 and higher remain open. 1 Classification

History section, Aubin statement
The conjecture, in all dimensions, was first stated explicitly in 1976 by Thierry Aubin.
History section, 2026 proof
In 2026, Shibing Chen, Mohammad Ghomi, and Peng Wang posted a proof of the conjecture in dimension 5.

In Branch: Differential Geometry, Lead paragraph
In mathematics, the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture is a fundamental problem in Riemannian geometry and geometric measure theory which states that the classical isoperimetric inequality may be generalized to spaces of nonpositive sectional curvature, known as Cartan-Hadamard manifolds.
