The Menger sponge, also known as the Menger cube, the Menger universal curve, the Sierpiński cube or the Sierpiński sponge, is a fractal curve and a three-dimensional generalization of the two-dimensional Sierpiński carpet. It was first described by Karl Menger in 1926 in his studies of the concept of topological dimension. It shares properties with the Cantor set and Cantor dust, since its construction requires removing the inner third of each remaining piece at every step, the same operation used to build those two sets.
