Karl Menger was an Austrian-born American mathematician, the son of the economist Carl Menger. He studied the theory of algebras, dimension theory and topology, and in graph theory he is credited with Menger's theorem. He was a student of Hans Hahn, took his doctorate at the University of Vienna in 1924, took part in the Vienna Circle, and later taught at the University of Notre Dame and the Illinois Institute of Technology. His most famous popular contribution is the Menger sponge, a three-dimensional version of the SierpiĆski carpet, and he is considered a founder of distance geometry.
