Robert Carmichael was an American number theorist best known for discovering what are now called Carmichael numbers. He was born in Goodwater, Coosa County, Alabama on 1 March 1879 and died in Merriam, Johnson County, Kansas on 2 May 1967. The composite numbers that pass Fermat's primality test for every base are named after him, and so is the Carmichael function that he defined in 1910, both examples of results in number theory that bear an American name.

The Carmichael numbers were named after the American mathematician Robert Carmichael by Nicolaas Beeger, in 1950. Øystein Ore had referred to them in 1948 as numbers with the "Fermat property", or "F numbers" for short.
