Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher was an English polymath, born on 17 February 1890 and died on 29 July 1962, who was active as a mathematician, statistician, biologist, geneticist and academic. He has been described as the single most important figure in twentieth century statistics. In genetics he combined the ideas of Gregor Mendel and Charles Darwin, using mathematics to unite Mendelian genetics and natural selection. From 1919 he worked at the Rothamsted Experimental Station for 14 years, analysing its crop experiments and developing the analysis of variance.
