In optics, Cauchy's equation, also called Cauchy's transmission equation, is an empirical relationship between the refractive index of a transparent material and the wavelength of light passing through it. It is named for the mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy, who first defined it in an 1830 article on the refraction and reflection of light.
