The Duffing equation, or Duffing oscillator, named after Georg Duffing, is a non-linear second-order differential equation used to model certain damped and driven oscillators, extending simple harmonic motion with an added cubic restoring-force term. It describes, for example, an elastic pendulum whose spring does not exactly obey Hooke's law, and it is a standard example of a dynamical system that exhibits chaotic behavior, including a frequency-hysteresis effect known as jump resonance.
