Faà di Bruno's formula is an identity in mathematics that generalizes the chain rule to higher derivatives, giving a way to compute the nth derivative of a composite function. It is named after the Italian mathematician Francesco Faà di Bruno, who published versions of it in 1855 and 1857, though the French mathematician Louis Francois Antoine Arbogast had already stated the formula in 1800, making Arbogast's the first published account.
