Jacobi's formula, named for the mathematician Carl Jacobi, is a result in matrix calculus that expresses the derivative of the determinant of a matrix in terms of the matrix's adjugate and the derivative of the matrix itself. For a differentiable matrix valued function of a real variable, the formula states that the derivative of the determinant equals the trace of the product of the adjugate and the derivative of the matrix. When the matrix is invertible, this can be rewritten as the determinant itself times the trace of the product of the inverse of the matrix and its derivative.
