The Jarzynski equality is an equation in statistical mechanics that relates the difference in free energy between two states to the irreversible work performed along an ensemble of trajectories connecting those same states. It is named after the physicist Christopher Jarzynski, who derived it in 1996 while at the University of Washington and Los Alamos National Laboratory, and it shows that fluctuations in the work done during a process obey constraints of their own, separate from the constraints governing the process's average work.
