Perspective (Graphical)

Geometry

Graphical perspective is a technique for representing objects the way they appear to the eye, giving an approximate depiction of three dimensional scenes on a flat surface such as paper or canvas. It rests on the mathematical principle that an object looks a given number of times smaller when it is that many times farther from the eye than its original distance. In linear perspective, objects shrink as their distance from the viewer increases and dimensions running along the line of sight appear foreshortened relative to those running across it, with receding lines converging toward vanishing points, typically placed along the horizon. The technique lets artists, architects and technical drafters turn three dimensional space into a coherent two dimensional composition, and is fundamental to painting, architectural drawing and technical illustration.
