Rodrigues' formula, formerly known as the Ivory-Jacobi formula, is a formula in mathematics that generates the Legendre polynomials. It was discovered independently by three mathematicians, Olinde Rodrigues in 1816, James Ivory in 1824, and Carl Gustav Jacobi in 1827, though the name settled on Rodrigues only after Charles Hermite pointed out in 1865 that Rodrigues had found it first, and Eduard Heine introduced the term Rodrigues formula in 1878. The name has since been extended to similar generating formulas for other families of orthogonal polynomials, making it a foundational tool in the study of special functions.
