The successor function is the basic operation used in constructing the natural numbers, assigning to each number n the next number, usually written S(n) or n+1. In the Peano axioms, the successor function together with a starting element, typically 0 or 1, and a small set of axioms about it is enough to generate the entire set of natural numbers and to define addition and multiplication recursively. The function is also a foundational primitive in mathematical logic and in the theory of computable functions, where it is one of the basic building blocks from which more complex recursive functions are built.
