A system of linear equations, or linear system, is a collection of two or more linear equations that share the same variables. A solution to such a system is an assignment of values to the variables that satisfies every equation simultaneously, and systems of this kind are a fundamental part of linear algebra, a subject that underlies most of modern mathematics. Computational algorithms for finding these solutions form an important part of numerical linear algebra and play a prominent role in engineering, physics, chemistry, computer science and economics, and a system of equations that is not linear can often be approximated by a linear one, a technique known as linearization, which is useful when building a mathematical model or computer simulation of a more complex system.
