In mathematics and physics, a tensor field is a function that assigns a tensor to every point of a region of a mathematical or physical space, so that the resulting quantity carries a unit of measurement appropriate to that setting. Tensor fields generalize scalar fields and vector fields, which assign a scalar or a vector respectively to each point of space, and they are used throughout differential geometry, algebraic geometry, general relativity, and the analysis of stress and strain in materials.
