Alexander Ostrowski was a Ukrainian-born mathematician, born in Kiev (now Kyiv) on 25 September 1893 and dying in Montagnola near Lugano, Switzerland on 20 November 1986, who worked on a wide variety of topics in both analysis and algebra. As a schoolboy he attended the seminar of D A Grave in Kiev, and he had already found original results on Galois fields and written his first paper by the time he finished the School of Commerce in 1911. Theorems on valuations, determinants and inequalities carry his name.
