Cahit Arf was a Turkish mathematician, known for the Arf invariant in topology. He was born in Salonika, then part of the Ottoman Empire and now Thessaloniki in Greece, on 11 October 1910 and died in Istanbul on 26 December 1997. When he was two years old the Balkan War broke out and his family escaped to Istanbul, where he began school at the age of four. In 1919 the family moved to Ankara, returned for a short time to Istanbul and finally settled in Izmir, where a teacher encouraged his interest in mathematics by setting him problems to solve. The MacTutor biography records his own account of his shy childhood and his later career as a mathematician.
